JUGLANDACEAE Juglans nigra L.
Tree 10 m. tall, 35 cm. in diameter; bark dark, closely furrowed. Terminal leaflet seldom fully developed.
Fruit abundant, not quite mature, but nearly full size, light green, strongly aromatic, the foliage with a similar smell but much weaker. Fruits mostly 3 together, sometimes only 1 or 2; they have been removed for pressing.
In fencerow at edge of cultivated field and formerly pastured S-facing slope. Saplings of this species now appearing abundantly in fencerow and old pasture since grazing stopped ca. 10 years ago. With Ulmus rubra,
U. americana, Ceitis occidentalis, Vitis riparia, Quercus alba, Pyrus ioensis.
