117° 16.83’ W. Long. Waterman Canyon, San Bernardino Mountains; vicinity of California Route 18 north of San Bernardino, east side of Old Waterman Canyon Road, north to northeast-facing slope. South of bridge over stream. Elevation about 2530 feet. Canyon, gneissic metamorphic rock, humus and sandy soil.
Chaparral, shrubland on dry slopes, transition to mesic canyon forest. Dominants in mesic areas: Acer macrophyllum, Juglans californica, Umbellularia, Ainus, Salix, Toxicodendron pubescens, Vitis. Rather common small tree 3-4 meters tall, flowers greenish, male pendulous, female at branch tips; fruits small, round. Leaves immature, soft. Local on shaded banks below road with Styrax.
