W. Wells estate. North facing slope. Tree spared by Corps of Engineers at request of Fred White at Duke and Mrs. Lois Garner, friend of the Wells and avid conservationist. She recalled that Dr. Wells thought this hickory might be a hybrid. 12" DBH. Bark tight, x-x. Leaflets 7-9, mainly 7. Large terminal buds. Few fruits on ground, large and elongate, husks splitting to near base. Old fruits collected from ground. 7/ u<. JT3 D. E. Stone 3893 22 Oct. 1980
