JUGLANDACEAE Carya ovata (Mill.) K. Koch
Tree 12 m. tall, 35 cm. in diameter. Bark in large, hard plates which become loose at the ends.
Leaves with 5 leaflets (never more), but sometimes with only 3 leaflets in part of twig near fruits. Fruits 1 to 3 together, most commonly 2, abundant, içimature, green, with faint aromatic smell but when cut with "bitter" smell; fresh husks not split and not separating easily from the nut.
With three others of this species (two more have blown down in last decade) on otherwise unwooded S-facing pasture slope, former prairie area.
