BOTANICAL ^ardeH, NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN 01484990 01484990 The New York Botanical Garden Woody Plants of U. S. A. JUGLANDACEAE Carya ovata (Mill.) K. Koch Tree 12 m. tall, 35 cm. in diameter. Bark in large, hard plates which become loose at the ends. Leaves with 5 leaflets (never more), but sometimes with only 3 leaflets in part of twig near fruits. Fruits 1 to 3 together, most commonly 2, abundant, içimature, green, with faint aromatic smell but when cut with "bitter" smell; fresh husks not split and not separating easily from the nut. With three others of this species (two more have blown down in last decade) on otherwise unwooded S-facing pasture slope, former prairie area. WISCONSIN: Richland Co., 3 miles SE of Richland Center.
