Disturbed deciduous woods on slightly sloping ridgetop, with Quercus alba, Carya ovata, Cornus altemifolia.
Tree 15 m. tall, 55 cm. in diameter; bark in large shaggy plates. Fruit yellow-green, turning brown and the valves somewhat splitting as they dry.
