Small tree 8 m. tall, 15 cm. in diameter; bark smooth; others here developing loose, platy bark when slightly larger in diameter. Common in fencerow between fields, on slight slope near ridgetop. Undoubtedly it and the associated Juglans nigra were planted by squirrrels with nuts from the adjacent deciduous woods where both are native. The Prunus serótina and Ceitis occidentalis were undoubtedly brought in by birds from the same areas. Male inflorescences light green, hanging; female flowers terminal, green.
