BOTANICAL Flora of Paumonek Wetland, Long Island Fagus grandifolia Ehrh. NEW YORK, SUFFOLK CO.: Huntington Station, in Paumonek Wetland, west of Walt Whitman High School, at the edge of the schools athletic field and the woodland. Large canopy tree, to 21 m tall. Bark silver-gray, smooth, with occasional graffiti. Growing in an area dominated by a colony of Fagus grandifolia within an Oak-Hickory Mesic Woodland. Forest floor locally bare with occasional Vibrunum acerifolium and Uvularia sessilifolia (later with Monotropa uniflora). Matthew C.
