Habitat
Growing along a shallow roadside ditch (somewhat disturbed & often mowed) adjacent to an acidic, seasonally wet, sandy prairie & beside a dirt road containing crushed shells & limestone, in sandy/organic soil (Basinger fine sand; siliceous, hyperthermic Spodic Psammaquents). Growing with Aletris lutea, Andropogon spp., Asimina reticulata, Aster reticulatus, etc.

Sprawling, prickly herb, uncommon, stems to 3 ft long. Flowers pink-magenta. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
