  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the geographic center of the city of Vila Velha, along Rio Tonantins in município Tonantins, Amazonas. Referred to "Traveling Luck for Rio Tonantins, Amazonas, Brazil" from the Traveling Luck website for location information for Rio Tonantins (http://travelingluck.com/South+America/Brazil/Amazonas/_3661892_Rio+Tonantins.html). Using the reference map and Google Maps - Satellite View, located the city of Vila Velha, situated at the mouth of Rio Tonantins (in accordance with other locality descriptions). Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the city. Because the city of Vila Velha does not have defined spatial boundaries, used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure from the selected coordinates to the geographic center of the nearest named place, the city of Tonantins, then halved this distance to approximate the linear extent of Vila Velha. Input coordinates, linear extent (1544.15 m.), and measurement error (.01 m.) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
