  • Description

    Pileus 5.5 cm broad, convex, dry, finely subvelutinous, soon glabrous and shiny, black. Flesh yellow, bluing in the stipe, with pungent odor and mild taste. Tubes subdecurrent, shallow (3 mm), dark yellow (3B-C8), unchanging, with pores an orange maroon, stuffed. Stipe 5 cm long, 2 cm broad, stoutly clavate with a pinched base, dry, bright yellow at apex, pale yellow below masked by fine, crowded pruinose to subscabrous dots.

    Allied to other P. portentosus based on analysis of Wilson et al 2012 (New Phytologist 194: 1079-1095). Based on ITS sequences, this specimen is allied to other P. portentosus specimens from China (Zhang et al 2015. Mycologia 107:12-20.)
