PLANTS OF NEW YORK
Quercus rubra L. FAGACEAE Enormous tree 70ft tall, trunk diameter 6-7ft. Occasional, growing in loamy soil (Phelps gravelly loam, minimal slope; Glossaquic Hapludalfs). An old, open-grown specimen probably at least 300 years old, with considerable die-back, but still somewhat healthy. To the south side of Ridge Road, Rt. 104, in front of a house at 5350 Ridge Rd., about 3.7mi W. of the intersection with Rt. 78 in Wrights Comers. Rt. 104 is built on an ancient, heavily used Indian trail, and an open-grown oak of this size in this spot could suggest that the site has been open for a long time, and perhaps was an area frequently used by native people prior to European settlement. Lockport township, Niagara Co.
