FAGACEAE Quercus velutina Lam.
Tree 10 m. tall, with 4 trunks from base, from 15 to 25 cm. in diameter, with many dead and persisting lower branches. Immature fruit not common. Two of the trunks may be of another individual and the acorns collected may thus be from two different plants.
Abundant and the only common tree species in dry sandy barrens.
WISCONSIN: Richland Co., near Cruson Slough, on the sterile sand terraces, never inundated, of the Wisconsin River valley, 2 miles NW of Lone Rock.
