A Revision of Lycianthes series Meizonodontae

Lycianthes stephanocalyx (Brandcgcc) Bitter
Mexico: State of Veracruz; Mpio. Coctzala; along old stone rd between Coetzala and
Cuichapa. About I -1.5 km from Coetzala. Side of road. 2300 ft.
Moist semi-tropical vegetation with Begonia, Araceae, Solatium spp., bananas, Compositae,
citrus and many epiphytes. Growing in the shade of coffee bushes and overstory trees. Very
common, appearing to reproduce clonaly. Spindly subshrub to 2m tall, some highly branched,
others nearly unbranched and falling over banks of roadside. Flowers white, stellate, with
equal yellow stamens coalesced into a tube. Mostly one flower per node, but sometimes two,
closed at time of collection (3 pm). Fruit globose to ovoid, red at maturity.
Informant: man at side of road and his son. Use: no use. Indigenous name: "arretillo"
