Lycianthes moziniana (Dunal) Bitter
Mexico: State of Tlaxcala; Mpio. Espaflita; Along rd to Espaflita, ca. 0.95 rd mi from
intersection with hwy 136, W side of road near large turnout. 8920 ft.
Original vegetation was Oak-Juniper woodland, which occurs across road near drainage. Now
mostly cultivated fields with many different kinds of weeds, but some trees left in and around
fields. This species is growing inside this com field but not in neighboring wheat field. Soil of
volcanic origin, black-brown and sandy, well drained. Uncommon here, the plants occurring
in one part of field. Perennial herb from storage root. Many plants look grazed or otherwise
tom off. Flowers purple, open when collected (8-9am), the corollas and ovaries badly eaten by
insects.
