Mexico: State of Guanajuato; Mpio. San Jose Iturbide; SW of San Jose Iturbide, near Rancho
El Guajolote, one hwy exit S of exit to San Jose, on W side of hwy 57, take dirt road E and
cross river. 6000 ft.
Dry matorral scrub with Opuntia, Yucca sp., Compositae, marigolds, Loasaceae, spiny
legumes, Physalis, mints, Cruciferae and grasses. Along paths and sides of agricultural fields
that are planted with com, beans and squash (the com was planted in May; no agrochemicals
are used here). Soil very eroded, dry. Common perennial herb from large storage root with
many basal branches, growing in large sprawling masses, near fences and under trees; some
plants spreading decumbent, others tall and twining; fruit immature, green with black stripes,
generally dangling from stems, but those on decumbent plants lying on ground, many with
holes bored into them (insect damage).
Informant: Margarita Vargaz Fucntcs dc Acosta, farmer; use: fruit not eaten, but children play
with them; indigenous name: "trompeta", one of two classes.
