A Revision of Lycianthes series Meizonodontae
(UC) UC Berkeley/ (XAL) Institute de Ecologia, Xalapa
Lycianthes ciliolata (Mart. & Gal.) Bitter
Mexico: State of Oaxaca; Mpio. Calpulalpan; town of Calpulalpan; 6700 ft.
Along paths, hedgerows and in cultivated fields. Pine-Oak forest with many Ericaceae
and ferns upslope of town. Foggy in morning. Plants not found in forest. Weed of
fields and hedgerows growing with com, beans and squash in several traditional fields
(no agrochemicals used) with crops planted in mounds of soil. Cultivated soil brown,
eroded places with light pink-white rock. Herbaceous perennial from thick storage
root; common, but only in hedgerows, not as common in fields; plants in shade to lm,
tall with big leaves, plants in open sun short with smaller leaves; flowers lilac with
violet rays, open by 6:30 am, closed in afternoon.
Informants: Mauricio Sanchez Luna, farmer of Calpulalpan; elderly woman who lives
near chapel; young man in garden in Calpulalpan. Uses: Mauricio: Edible fruit. Plant
grows as a volunteer after initial seeding and sowing of com, and is left alone during
later weedings. He learned of plant from grandfather. He leaves plant in field "out of
curiosity". Most people here now weed plant out of their fields. Elderly woman: Edible
dark fruit. Young man: Edible fruit. Has a plant in his garden. He cuts it and
transplants it when it grows big. Indigenous names: "tronchichi”; "tonchicho”;
"tronchichi."
