Lycianthes acapulcensis (Baillon) Bitter
Mexico: State of GuerTero; Mpio. Chitpancingo; Jardin Botanico of the Universidad
Autonoma de Mexico at Chilpancingo. 4400 ft.
In secondary growth area near shallow drainage. All the plants but these have been cut back, as
they are every year (these were left by the gardeners for us). Area used to be mesquite and com
fields. Soil brown with white rocks (limestone?). Common, but only in this one spot in the
botanical garden. Perennial herb ftom storage root. These roots about 2 dm long. Some plants
quite large with many branches. Others viney. Most plants past fruit (only one fruit left).
Mature fruit purple-black.
Informant: Isaac Cabrera Perez. Use: edible fruit. Common around this area and where Isaac
grew up (Yextla, W of Chilpancingo). Indigenous name: "huevo de cuervo".
