  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Unable to find the precise location of "above" the mouth of Rio Caturiapixuna because no distance provided; instead, georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of the mouth of Rio Caturiapixuna, a tributary of Rio Solimões, in Mun. Amaturá, Amazonas, extending the uncertainty radius to 200% (georeferenced according to the method described in the MaNIS Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide "Near a Named Place" to account for the added uncertainty). Referred to "Fôlha IÇÁ SA-19" [map] for location information for Rio Caturiapixuna (Carta do Brasil ao Milionésimo, Fôlha IÇÁ SA-19 [map]. 1:1,000,000. In: Faissol, Speridião et. al. Carta Internacional do Mundo ao Milionésimo. 2nd edition. Rio de Janeiro: Instituto brasileiro de geografia e estatistica, 1972. p. 6.) Used the reference material and Google Maps - Earth View to find the mouth of Rio Caturiapixuna. Used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the mouth of the river (confluence of Rio Caturiapixuna and Rio Solimões). Because the center of the nearest named place, in this case determined to be the mouth of Igarapé Machado, is farther from the center of the mouth of Rio Caturiapixuna than the linear extent of mouth of the river itself, used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the mouth of Igarapé Machado, then halved this distance to approximate the linear extent of this locality. Input coordinates, linear extent (9010.0 m), and measurement error (2.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Near a Named Place).
