  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Raleigh Falls, along the Coopername River, in Kabalebo, Suriname, taking into account the added uncertainty of the word "near" in the locality description. Used clues from other locality descriptions and the Google Image Gallery (crowdsourced georeferenced photographs) to locate the precise location of Raleigh Falls, along the Coopername River. Used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the waterfall area, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Because of the difficulty in determining the nearest named place equivalent to the waterfall, followed the Biogeomancer Guide to Best Practices for Georeferencing, Near a Feature Method. Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of the waterfalls (using visual evidence to determine), then doubling this distance (200%). Input coordinates, linear extent (4000 m), and measurement error (5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Biogeomancer Guide to Best Practices for Georeferencing, Near a Feature).
