  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Prior to the 1990s, the city of Breu Branco was situated approximately 35 - 40 km. south of the city of Tucuruí. The construction of the Tucuruí Dam, which spans across Rio Tocantins in Tucuruí, Pará, caused the area south of the Dam to become flooded. The city of Breu Branco became submerged underwater and was relocated east of the Tucuruí Dam (La Rovere, E.L. and Mendes, F.E. 2000. TucuruÌ Hydropower Complex, Brazil, A WCD case study prepared as an input to the World Commission on Dams, Cape Town, www.dams.org. Accessed: 14 November 2013). Unable to find the precise former location of Breu Branco because of its submergence. Georeferenced to 20 km. south of the geographic center of the shore of the city of Tucuruí along Rio Tocantins, which is approximately half of the span of the river between Tucuruí and the approximate former location of Breu Branco. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the geographic center of the shoreline of the city of Tucuruí. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the geographic center of the shoreline. Used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to find the linear extent of the shoreline of the city of Tucuruí by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of the city of Tucuruí along Rio Tocantins. To find the 20 km. south offset: input coordinates, linear extent (9612.15 m.), measurement error (.01 m.), offset direction (S), offset distance (20000 m.), and distance precision (100 m.) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Offset: Offset along a heading).
