  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. The construction of the Tucuruí Dam, which spans across Rio Tocantins in Tucuruí, Pará, caused the area south of the Dam to become flooded, resulting in the submergence of the city of Jatobal (La Rovere, E.L. and Mendes, F.E. 2000. TucuruÌ Hydropower Complex, Brazil, A WCD case study prepared as an input to the World Commission on Dams, Cape Town, www.dams.org.). Unable to find the precise location of "estação da antiga estrada de ferro do Tucuruí" or the city of Jatobal because of the inundation, instead georeferenced to the approximated geographic center of the flooded region within município Jacunda, in accordance with other locality descriptions. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located Rio Tocantins and the flooded region due to the Tucuruí Dam within município Jacunda. Used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line between the beginning and end of the flooded region (Rio Tocantins) within município Jacunda, then halved this distance to approximate the location of the geographic center of the region. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the flooded region. Input coordinates, linear extent (distance from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of the flooded region within Jacunda, 13803.1 m.), and measurement error (.1 m.) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
