  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic midpoint of what is determined to be the "upper" portion of the Demarara River in Guyana. Used Google Maps – Earth View to locate the Demarara River. Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to measure a straight line between the mouth of the river (where the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean; see coordinates: 6.812193, -58.176703) and the approximate headwaters of the river (approximated through the dense forest cover where smaller rivers meet to form the Demarara River; see coordinates: 4.777381, -58.406006), then halved the distance (113.85 km) to find the midpoint of the line. Chose a point along the Demarara River nearest to the midpoint of the line; used the Google Maps – What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the midpoint of the river (5.801213, -58.357546). Used Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool again to find the midpoint of the "upper" half of Demarara River by measuring from selected coordinates to the headwaters of the river, then halving this distance (56.985 km) to find geographic midpoint of the upper half of the river. Used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic midpoint of the upper Demarara River, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent of the upper portion of river by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of the upper segment of the river (59.96 km). Input coordinate source (locality description), coordinates, datum (WGS84), coordinate precision (0.00001 degrees), extent of named place (59960 m), and measurement error (10 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to the Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: River, stream, road, path).
