    Flat on gypsum-derived sand in desertscrub with Larrea, Yucca filifera, Opuntia, Condalia warnockii, Machaeranthera, Asphodelus, Buddleja scorpioides, etc. Common.

    Rhizomatous perennial herb; wings and keel deep magenta, banner yellow with white margin, turning purple with age. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
