  • Specimen Notes

[attached letter]: "Dear Rupert, For some time I have been puzzling over the sample of Astragalus I am sending you herewith. I[t] was sent to me by Dr. H. D. Harrington of Colorado State University, Fort Collins, and he got it from some range men who belive it is the plant causing losses to livestock in the part of Colorado where it originated. At first I got only the flowering material and so asked for fruit. The fruit sent is supposed to have come from the same patch and probably from this same species, judging by some very immature pods on our specimen. The thing reminds me in some ways of A. desperatus Jones, but the aspect of the plants is unlike our specimens of that species. It also bears some resemblances to A. malacus Gray, but is hardly that species either. I am wondering if you have some clues. You may keep the sample of you wish, as we have more of it here. Best wishes for the approaching Christmas season. Sincerely Ted, C. L. Porter"
