Georeferencing Method
Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of the city of Serra do Navio in Mun. Serra do Navio, Amapá. Used Google Maps – Earth and Terrain Views to locate the city of Serra do Navio, along Rio Amapari. Used the Google Maps – What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the city. Because Serra do Navio does not have defined spatial boundaries on Google Maps, used the Google Maps – Measure Distance Tool to approximate the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the approximate geographic center of the nearest named place on the same side of Rio Amapari, the city of Água Branca do Amapari, then halving this distance (2429.3 m). "Serra" translates to mountain, and adjacent (east) of the city lies a mountain which would not be completely included in the linear extent if using the halved distance to the nearest city. Because of this, used the Google Maps – Measure Distance Tool again to measure from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of the mountain and used this distance instead as the linear extent of Serra do Navio, treating it as a defined area locality type. Input coordinates, coordinate precision (.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), linear extent (4850.0 m), and measurement error (5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Defined Area).
