Dioica. Pianta densa caespitosa, atro-viridis. C«uli«
usque ad 1 cm altus, erectus, parce divisus. Folia caudina,
sicca erecto-appressa, humectata prenda, ovato-lanceo-
lata, acuminata, concava-canaliculata, inferiors imberbia,
superiora pilifera, margine erectâ, superioria involuta. Fo-
lia perichaetialia multo majora, 3—4 mm long». Cellulae
laminarum hand sinuosulo, superne irregulariter bistrato-
sae, quadrato-rotundatae, diametro 6-7 nun, basiliter chlo-
rophÿllosae, rectangulares, y aide incrassatae. Pedicellus
erectus, 1.2 mm longus; theca emergenta, ovato-globosa,
1.2 mm longs, 0.5 mm lata, badia; striata; calyptra cucul-
lata; operculum oblique-rostratum, exostomii dentibus bi-
fidis, aurantiacis, papillosis; spori 10-12 pm, fuscolutei,

Plants growing in dull-green to blackish-green,
hoary cushions, frequently in flat patches. Stans
erect, simple or sparsely branched, 0.5-1.0(1.5) cm
high. Dioicous. Leaves larger towards stem tips,
1.0-1.5 mm long, appressed when dry, erect-patent
from an erect base when moist,- concave, oblong-
lanceolate, above gradually narrowed to a short
hair-point. Margin plane, not thickened, incurved
above. Perichaetial leaves enlarged, ±3.0 mm long
without hair-point. AreOlation in basal part of leaf
pellucid, unistratose. Basal marginal cells hyaline,
quadrate to shoct-rectangular with thickened trans-
verse walls. Basal paracostal cells short-rectangular;
20—40 |im long. Areolation at mid-leaf with bistra-
to» ridges, higher up gradually changing to short-
rectangular cells with thin walls. Areolation in apex
bistratose, opaque, cells rounded, 6-7 pm wide.
Costa firm, projecting on dorsal side, disappearing
in upper lamina, hair-point 0.2-0.5 mm long, brit-
tle, denticulate. < Gemmae unknown, but short-
leaved innovations in upper leaf axils frequently
present. Seta erect, ±1.2 mm long. Capsules hidden
or scarsely emerging above enlarged perichaetial
leaves, chestnut-brown, striate in basal part, ovoid
to obloid, ±1.2 mm long, exothecial cells ± thin-
walled, 3-6 stanata present between die strine »
extreme base of urn. Operculum mamillat#» to
obliquely rostellate, peristome teeth mange, papil-
lose, cleft above. Spores yellow, smooth, 10-13
pm.

characteristic species of the Australian alps where

of Grimmia on various types of igneous rock from
1,200-2,200 m. According to the above described
characters it is placed in the subgenus GuembeUa
(Hampe) Limpr. hi the field,'it can be confrised with
G. grisea, however in the latter species the capsules
«e clearly exsated and the upper part of the leaf
is not subulate and bistratose, but plane and uni-
stratose with bistratose ridges. Grimmia macro-per-
ichaetialis is characterized by dull, blackish patch
