Shrubby tree 25 ft tall, trunk diameter 1 ft, rare, twif sap odor remniscent of apples,. Phenology of specimen: Flower, Fruit.

Growing in dry, gravelly loam over serpentine bedrock (Deadfall family-Lithic cryorchepts complex, 40-60% slopes; loamy-skeletal, magnesic Typic Cryorthents), in an open forest/savanna seasonally buried deep in snow. Growing with Abies concolor (?), Achillea millefolium, Allium falcifolium, Astragalus whitneyi var. siskiyouensis, Cirsium cymosum, Delphinium depauperatum, Eriogonum umbellatum var. polyanthum, Eriophyllum lanatum var. achillaeoides, Lupinus lepidus var. lobbii, Monardella odoratissima, Orthocarpus cuspidatus subsp. cuspidatus, Penstemon parvulus, Phlox hoodii subsp. canescens, Pinus balfouriana subsp. balfouriana P.jeffreyi, P. monticola, Senecio integerrimus var. major & Tsuga mertensiana (rare).
