  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Unable to find the precise location of "Igarapé Rosinha" and unable to find any record of a lake named "Lago Castanho-Mirim." Presently, there is a lake named Lago Castanho and an adjacent water-body named Parana do Castanho-Mirim. Assumed collection to be from Parana do Castanho-Mirim, from the inclusion of "Mirim" in the name and in accordance with other locality descriptions. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Parana do Castanho-Mirim in Mun. Careiro, Amazonas. Used Google Maps - Earth View to find the approximate geographic center of Parana do Castanho-Mirim, which stems from Lago Mamori. Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to measure a straight line between the approximate beginning of Parana do Castanho-Mirim (where Lago Mamori leads into Parana do Castanho-Mirim) and the approximate end of the canal (where it leads to Lago Castanho), then halved this distance to find the midpoint of this line. Chose a point along Parana do Castanho-Mirim nearest to the midpoint of the line; used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the canal, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of the waterway. Input coordinates, linear extent (16960.0 m), and measurement error (5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
