October 9> 1972 Dr. R. C. Barneby New York Botanical Gardens Dear Dr. Barneby: I will be grateful if you will take a look at the enclosed astragalus and either confirm or correct my identification. Astragalus austinae, as you know, is a very rare plant presently known from only five peaks in the Tahoe to Dormer Summit region. If my collection is correctly identified, then this is a new record . Mr. John Thomas Howell at the California Academy of Sciences has looked at the plant and recommended that I send it on to you. Since this is for publication in a local flora of the Tahoe basin, it is important that I have a correct determination. Many thanks for your trouble. You may keep the specimen and label. I am enclosing a self-addressed envelope for the convenience of your reply. Gladys Smith Instructor in Botany University of California Extension Program 2515.
