Growing on a NE-facing slope in an open forest. Growing with Abies concolor (?), ... [see herbarium label for long list of associated species]. In rocky loam over serpentine bedrock (Endlich family-Rubble land complex, 15-40% slopes; loamy-skeletal, isotic Typic Dystrocryepts).
