Habitat
In an open forest/savanna seasonally buried deep in snow. Growing with Abies concolor, ... [see herbarium label for long list of associated species]. Rare. Growing in dry, gravelly loam over serpentine bedrock (Deadfall family-Lithic cryochepts complex, 40-60 % slopes; loamy skeletal, magnesic Typic Cryorthents).

Double-trunked tree (or perhaps 2 trees) 40 ft tall, trunk diameter 1 ft, twig sap very fragrant. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
