In an open forest/savanna seasonally buried deep in snow. Growing with Abies concolor, ... [see herbarium label for long list of associated species]. Common. Growing in dry, gravelly loam over serpentine bedrock (Deadfall family-Lithic cryochepts complex, 40-60 % slopes; loamy skeletal, magnesic Typic Cryorthents).
