  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the geographic midpoint of Rio Trombetas between site of Cachoeira Porteira and the mouth of Rio Cachorro in Pará, Brazil. Referred to map "Mapa das bacias do Trombetas e do Mapuera, no noroeste do Pará" provided by article "Notas sobre o antigo povoamento indígena do alto Trombetas e Mapuera" by Antonio Porro for location information of Rio Cachorro (Porro, Antonio. "Notes on the ancient indian settlements of the upper Trombetas and Mapuera rivers, Pará, Brazil." Bol. Mus. Para. Emilio Goeldi Cienc. Hum., Dec. 2008, vol.3, no.3, p.387-397. ISSN 1981-8122 accessed 31 October 2013) and referred to map "Figure 1: Location map of two sites of archaeological black earth (ABD) investigated at Cachoeira-Porteira, Lower Amazon region" provided by "The ceramic artifacts in archaeological black earth (terra preta) from Lower Amazon region, Brazil: chemistry and geochemical evolution" article for location information for Cachoeira Porteira (Lima da Costa, Marcondes, et al. "The ceramic artifacts in archaeological black earth (terra preta) from Lower Amazon region, Brazil: chemistry and geochemical evolution" (2004) accessed 24 October 2013). Using the reference material and Google Maps - Satellite View, located the two sites along Rio Trombetas. Used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line between the sites along the river; halved this distance to approximate the midpoint along Rio Trombetas. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the midpoint, on the adjacent shore. Input coordinates, linear extent (distance from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of the segment along the river, 4710.64 m.) and measurement error (.01 m.) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius.
