  • Description

Large tree, 70 cm. in diameter; bark somewhat more finely furrowed and flakey and dark than in Pinus strobus, with other Pinus, including typical P. strobus, and this individual tree obviously misidentified. Cones hanging, larger and the base of the scales orangish, the tip more yellowish than in P. strobus. Comes common on ends of branches, especially the upper ones, but a few even on lower brnches which are mostly in the sun Cones strictly hanging, single or paired, very resinous. The old ones on the ground are undoubtedly from this individual but seem longer than the mature cones on tree this year. Only one young green cone seen on this tree, while the nearby very large P. wallichiana has many of them and its cones are long-peduncled. "Pinus strobus 95864AP New York Bot. Gard." Cultivated. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
