  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Unable to find the precise location of "old BR-422" mentioned in the locality description because this road is partially submerged. The construction of the Tucuruí Dam, which spans across Rio Tocantins in Tucuruí, Pará, caused the area south of the Dam to become flooded and a new highway BR-422 was constructed to the west of the old flooded BR-422 (La Rovere, E.L. and Mendes, F.E. 2000. TucuruÌ Hydropower Complex, Brazil, A WCD case study prepared as an input to the World Commission on Dams, Cape Town, www.dams.org. Accessed: 14 November 2013). Because of the inability to locate the submerged road, georeferenced to 25 km. south of the geographic center of the city of Tucuruí. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the city of Tucuruí in Para, Brazil. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates of the approximate geographic center of the city. Used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to find linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the approximate farthest extent of the city of Tucuruí. To find the 25 km. south offset: input coordinates, linear extent linear extent (12326.9 m.), offset direction (S), offset distance (25000 m.), measurement error (.1 m.), and distance precision (100 m.) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Offset: Offset at a heading).
