Georeferencing Method
Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Referred to EFMM Estrada de Ferro Madeira-Mamoré website for a map of the Madeira-Mamoré Railway route (http://vfco.brazilia.jor.br/ferrovias/mapas/1965-Estrada-de-Ferro-Madeira-Mamore.shtml, accessed 8/4/2014). This railway is no longer in use. Georeferenced to 214.5 km, the midpoint of the provided offset range, along the Madeira-Mamoré railway in Rondônia, Brazil. Using the reference material, Google Earth, and Google Maps - Satellite View, located the antiquated railway. Beginning at the start of the railroad track in the city of Porto Velho, used the Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure approximately 214.5 km (214.501 km) along the railway toward the city of Guajará Mirim (end of railway). Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates at this offset along the railroad. Used the Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) again to find the linear extent of the starting location (Porto Velho station) by measuring from the approximate geographic center of the station area to the farthest extent of the station area (using visual evidence). Input coordinates, linear extent (0.316434 km), measurement error (0.0005 km), and distance precision (1 km) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius. Added half of the offset range (0.5 km) to the uncertainty radius to account for the added uncertainty of the offset provided in a range format.
