Georeferencing Method
Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of Rio Pitinga in Mun. Presidente Figueiredo, Amazonas. Used Google Maps - Earth View to locate Rio Pitinga, a tributary of Rio Uatumã. The mouth of Rio Pitinga is adjacent to the reservoir of the Balbina Hydroelectric Dam (UHE Balbina). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool to measure a straight line between the mouth of the river (confluence of Rio Pitinga and the reservoir area of UHE Balbina) and the headwaters of the river (approximated through the dense forest cover), then halved this distance to find the midpoint of the line. Chose a point along Rio Pitinga nearest to the midpoint of the line; used the Google Maps - What's Here Tool to find the coordinates of the midpoint of the river, on the adjacent shore (collection assumed to be terrestrial). Used the Google Maps - Measure Distance Tool again to find the linear extent by measuring from the selected coordinates to the farthest extent of Rio Pitinga. Input coordinates, linear extent (73150.0 m), and measurement error (5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius. Note: UHE Pitinga was built along Rio Pitinga in the late 1990s; the selected coordinates are located downstream from the Dam.
