    Common in second growth. Springs up on abandoned land and pastures. Common. This tree is the most common of the Melastomataceae on the Island.

  • Description

    Tree 30-50 ft. tall; petals creamy-white. Trunk fluted, bark grey-brown, blotched, smooth. Wood light creamy color, close grained, rather hard. Sap makes purple-blue staine when fresh. Flowers mostly at top of crown giving tree conspicuous appearance in forest, especially in groves. Leaves are deep green and glabrous above but grey-green with rusty pubescence below and with 5 prominent veins sunken above. The flowers are in long spike-like clusters, branching and erect. The petals are creamy-white and the stamens yellow and exposed with the turning back of the petals. The stamens are shaped like a machete with notches on the concave side.
