Habitat
Western bluff of the Bronx River; deciduous forest, consisting of mostly spontaneous native trees, but with some planted and spontaneous aliens also; the forest formerly dominated by Tsuga and Kalmia.

Description
Tree 3 m tall, the stem 3 cm diam; bark pale brown, the lenticels rough; branches opposite and sub-opposite; twigs purple; leaf blades very thick, the adaxials dark green, lustrous, the abaxials lighter.
