Description
Tree 11 m tall, was taller but the top died and was cut, the trunk ca 35 cm diam; bark rough, forming plates with lose edges, like Acer saccharum, but black even darker than Gleditsia triacanthos, a few sapsucker holes observed; leaf abaxials glaucous; whole tree covered with fruit, nearly every twig fruiting. The leaves on specimens are typical for whole tree which is growing in full sun. NYBG accession number: "02674 N, Acer saccharum, PT, L, 02674, NYBG Native and Natural". It is doubtful this tree was planted because it is growing in a narrow fissure on top of a narrow rock outcrop--a very unlikely place to plant a tree when a few feet away the rock drops off and there is ample soil.
