Habitat
Very flat area probably formerly a broad floodplain of the Bronx River; it is now intensively cultivated with mostly exotic conifers.

Description
Magnificent tree ca 20 m tall, the trunk ca 1.4 m diam, flared at the base; roots horizontal at or just below the surface extending in circle out to the drip line; bark brown, deeply furrowed, the ridges braided, flat, scaly, forming thick visible layers; branches several from upper half of trunk, thick and curved, eventually pendulous to form a broad, round umbrella-like crown, the branch tips nearly touching the ground all the way around; fruits green. NYBG accession number "06791, PT, unknown" This tree probably predates the Garden. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
