BAHIA, BRAZIL
Merostachys
Municipio Ubaitaba: just north of Ubaitaba on BR 101,
Fazenda Santa Rita. Undisturbed forest at top of serra
above cacao plantation. Elev. 150-200m. Bamboo forming al-
most pure stand at top of serra; enormous clumps of 100
or more culms up to 4cm. diam., erect for 15m and then be-
coming thin and pendulous, glabrous except for the velutin-
ous lowermost internodes and scabrous uppermost internodes.
Culm leaves: sheath purplish-green, becoming stramineous ,
caducous; blade reflexed. Branch complement: abcut 150
branches at most developed nodes. Foliage does not wilt *
when culm is severed.
