    In mesic open to semi-open red-sandy banks and slopes. With Salix exigua, Pinus ponderosa, Clematis ligusticifolia, Thermopsis, occasional Abies, Berberis repens, Chrysopsis villosa, Rosa woodsii, Gilia aggregata, Equisetum, Cirsium, Chrysothamnus, Amelanchier, Artemisia tridentata, Oenothera elats, O. pallida, Castilleja linearifolia, Frasera. Fairly common.
