  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. The exact location of "RPPN Salto Apepique" could not be found; assumed its entrance to be somewhere between the town of Ponta do Tulha and the village of Retiro, along the unnamed side-road which connects these two named places. Georeferenced to a point along the unnamed side-road which connects the town of Ponta do Tulha (located approximately 20 km from the city of Ilhéus along the road to the city of Itacaré) to the village of Retiro (found a few km west of Ponta do Tulha along a side-road which branches to the left from the main Ilhéus-Itacaré highway) closest to the approximate geographic midpoint between these two named places, in Mun. Ilhéus, Bahia. Using Google Maps - Satellite View and Distance Measurement Tool, found the location of Ponta do Tulha by measuring approximately 20 kilometers along highway BA-001 from the city of Ilhéus towards the city of Itacaré; verified the correct location of Ponta do Tulha using Wikimapia. Found the location of the nearby village of Retiro (also using Wikimapia) along the side-road departing from Ponta do Tulha, just as described in the locality information. Beginning at the approximate geographic center of Ponta da Tulha (-14.5941325 -39.0570402), used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure a straight line to the approximate geographic center of Retiro (-14.5850397 -39.0850425), utilizing the boundaries provided by Wikimapia for estimating the centers of both places; then halved this distance to approximate the location of the geographic midpoint. Used Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs to find the coordinates for a point along the unnamed side-road closest to this midpoint. Input coordinates , linear extent (distance from the selected coordinates to the most distant of the two town centers, Ponta do Tulha, 2205.26 m), and measurement error (0.01 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Between two Places).
