In an open, snowy forest. With Abies sp., Arctostaphylos patula, Ceanothus velutinus, Chrysolepis chrysophylla, Paxistima myrsinities, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Rhamnus purshiana and Rubus parviflorus. Occasional. In very rocky loam at the W edge of a lava field.
