In an open, shrubby savanna . With Arctostaphylos nummularia, Cupressus pygmaea, Pinus contorta, Rhododendron macrophyllum and Vaccinium ovatum. Common. On sandy loam (Blacklock and Aborigine soils, 0 to 5 percent slopes; sandy, mixed, isomeric, ortstein, shallow Typic Duraquods to fine mixed, semiactive, isomesic Typic Albaquults).
