CÌ400 min pluviosity per year, dry season from August to October). Several vege-
tation types mixed in a mosaic-1 ike fashion. "Chapada", light and open forest ,
with trees 10-25 m tall, on sandy soil. Prominent tree species:. Tapiria guùnSi-t
sis ("pau Pombo") , Astroniurn fraxini folium ("Gon$al0 Alves"), Tetrayastris
altissima ("Amescla"), Caryocar sp. ("Piqui"), Tabebuia Sp. ("Pau d' Arco"),
"Pau Chapada". "CerradoH(calle<f "Camoo" in this region), lower trees, more open
vegetation with grassy groundlayer, on sandy soil: oùalea grandiflora ("Pau
Terra"), Cum tei J a americana ("Lixa"), Dimorphandra Sp. ("Faveira"), Platonia
Jnsignis ("BacUri"), Parkia Sp., Annona coriacea and several species of
Byrsonima ("Muriel"). "Babassu forest" with Orbignya martiana and O. eichlcri
palms. "Tabuleiro", grassy fierids on clayed soli, inundated during the rainy
season, covered by low herbaceous vegetation. On patches with raised soil plat-
form "islands" of shrubby or forest-like vegetation with elements from all
surrounding vegetation types are occurring. Along the water course and around
the small headwater lagoons tall ."Buriti palms" (Mauritia fiexuosa) grow, and
Jn open swampy places with grasses and sedges, Araceae (ealadium sp. and others)
occur.
