Sphacelaria taitensis Setchell, sp. nov.

ad substrata solida affixis luteo-fuscis, usque ad 1.5 cm.
altis; filanentis erect is,, basi e filamenti3 curtis stolon-
oidei3 in disco irregulari coalescentibus generatis, supero
alterne aut secunde ramosis; filament is primari is basi 40-60
}i,,apice 32 u diam. , articulis basalibus, 54-64 u, terminalibus
circa 32 }i longis, basalibus 4-5, terminalibus 1-2 dissepimenta
verticalia a latere viso ostendentibus, dissopirnentis trans-
versalibus secondariis abeuntibus; propagulis a latere visis
late triangularibu3, 120-260 yi altis (stipite gracili, 60-80 y
longo et 3-5-cellulari incluso) 120 u latis (trans cornua),
eornuis,2, quoque 3-cellulari, gracilibus, leviter sursum pro-
jicientibus; pilis, zoosporangiis et gametangiis, nondum visis.

The proposed new species belongs to the group of South
Pacific species, 3* cornuta, S. novae-hollandiae, and S. novae-
caledoniae. It approaches the last in dimensions but has differ-
ent propagula, which in turn approach those of S. cornuta in
shape, but the main portion is broader while the horns are shorter,
possibly 3touter, and more suddenly tapering.
