Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen was appointed Rector of Aarhus University in 2005, and he is Vice-
Chairman of the Danish Rectors’ Conference and Board member of the European University
Association (EUA). For 18 years he worked outside Europe and returned to Denmark from a 13-
year-long position as Lead Higher Education Specialist at the World Bank, Washington, DC. For
the World Bank he designed and evaluated sector investments around the globe and in particular in
Asia and Latin America. While located in Washington, he remained active in university and
research policy work in Denmark, i.a. as Vice-Chairman of the blue-ribbon commission on
Science, Technology & Innovation (2000-01).
His long-term commitment to research and talent development is reflected in national positions of
trust, e.g. as Rector of the Danish Research Academy, Board member of the Danish National
Research Foundation, Commissioner in the Prime Minister’s Growth Forum, Vice-Chairman of the
Danish Government’s Research Commission, Chairman of the Danish Environmental Research
Programme, Chairman of the Danish Natural Science Research Council and member of the Danish
Academy of Natural Sciences as well as the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences.
Internationally, Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen has also served as a member of OECD review teams on
regional innovation systems in the Netherlands; Chairman of the Nordic Universities Association
(NUS); President of the Nordic Academy for Advanced Study, Norway, Danish representative to
the European Science Research Council (ESF) and founding member of Euroscience.
Another strong commitment of Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen is the growth of developing countries
through high quality university systems. In this capacity he has served as Commissioner of the
Danish Africa Commission and Chairman of the Danish Council for Development Research.
Holm-Nielsen graduated as a botanist from Aarhus University, where he was also Dean of the
Faculty of Science (1976-79) – a position he left to take up a professorship in Ecuador. He has
written about 130 research publications, the majority on Botany and on issues in higher education,
science and technology, innovation and globalisation.
As an expert of Botany, Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen held many international honorary offices such as
Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute, Rome,
Italy and Chairman of the International Center for Tropical Agriculture, Cali, Colombia. -
