Son of M. P. Porsild, A. E. Porsild first borrowed the word "pingo" from the Inuit in 1938 to describe the mounds of earth-covered ice found in the Arctic. He was the 1966 recipient of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society's Massey Medal for his contributions to Arctic botany and to Canadian science in general.
